Stream: The Magic of Christmas

Having eagerly booked tickets for this outdoor production as soon as it was announced I was bitterly disappointed when new COVID-19 restrictions were announced, and I could not travel from the Highlands Tier 1 to Perth Level 2. Fortunately, the ever-inventive Festival theatre came up with an idea and treated us to a filmed version. So, sitting by my fire I was able to enjoy this delightful production. With enthusiastic performances by the cast of four and filmed in the beautiful but chilly gardens of the theatre it reminded us of the significant part Christmas entertainment plays in our lives. Last year’s production of A Christmas Carol was outstanding, and I cannot remember a year when I did not go to a Pantomime, Christmas Play, Ballet, or variety show. So, this charming show filled the gap.

Designed for the audience to imagine a live performance and filmed in Stirling and Pitlochry, the 30-minute performance follows the journey of Christmas elves, Lari (Barbara Hockaday) and Hari (Ali Watt), who have a big problem: the cheeky elves were playing football with Prancer, Dancer and Vixen and have lost the North Star!

With no North Star, how will Santa (Colin McCredie) find his way to all the houses to deliver the presents this Christmas? Seeking the help of the wise Mrs Clause (Clare Grogan), the pair of elves go on a magical quest to find the lost North Star.

Written and directed by Russell Beard and Elizabeth Newman, the story has real heart and has plenty of opportunities for the audience to join in. Colourful sets enhance the garden setting as we enjoy a cheeky run through of The Twelve Days of Christmas, ending up in Santa Grotto with all the bountiful trimmings we expect. The cast sing and dance enthusiastically never letting the energy drop. They must have all done TIE in the past. So, although a snowy journey through the Mountains to lovely Pitlochry was denied, at least I got to enjoy some Christmas Cheer. I am waiting for my House of Bruar free gift from them to pop through the post providing a fitting end to a lovely experience.
