Single: State of Confusion by Cody Feechan

‘State of Confusion’ is the latest single from Fife singer-songwriter Cody Feechan.

The press release refers to it as “indie pop”, though it strikes me as more pop-rock, with influences of classic rock, country rock and a touch of blues.

The lyrics are about making the tough decision to end a troubled relationship, though the overall sound is instantly upbeat and cheering. The ‘uplifting summer vibe’ Cody mentions is an apt description. After a short pickup, the full band kicks in with gusto - a bluesy, classic rock guitar riff, a happy, major key sound and simple chord structure, instantly catchy and smile-inducing, recurring throughout the song. The addition of an organ gives a fun, sunny sound, harking back to old-school rock. Getting straight into the full arrangement like this gives the track instant “oomph”, setting the mood. The verses’ sparser arrangement, focused most on the drums, allows breathing space and contrast.

Cody’s vocals are powerful and sung with conviction, coming over heartfelt, sincere, and determined.  Her voice has an aspirate tone and a little strategically placed rasp, bringing emotional impact. She seems to have put aside the native Scottish accent heard in her earlier work for a hint of a southern American twang. Whether this is a conscious change for her moving forward or not, it suits the arrangement and mood for this track.

Cody’s lyrics bear a refreshing eloquence, akin to phrases you might hear in a poem or prose. Some stand-out lines for me are “You turn your back in disregard”, “…I feel disarray, my change is underway” and “Picture perfect turned black and white”. Contrasting these with simple, raw lines like “I feel used, I feel misled” and “truth be told I still got doubts” is effective and adds authenticity.

Upon my first listen, the chorus seemed more like a pre-chorus, as if leading to another section. After further listening, however, I realised this enhanced the theme of being in a state of flux and going into the unknown.

A running metaphor of going down a path or road fits the song’s general message, coming to a climax in the bridge: “…the brakes, they’re taken off completely/Overtake, you’re speeding through my mind….I can no longer wait in line”. There is a sense of setting out on a journey, and, though unsure of exactly where to, a feeling of release, breaking free and finally putting yourself first. It paints a picture of speeding down the highway with the windows down, hair flying in the wind.  Someone going through relationship issues or a breakup could find comfort in these lyrics.

“State of Confusion” is an uplifting listen, with expressive, creative lyrics, catchy melodies and a bright sound that will bring a smile to your face. I’m glad to have discovered it and look forward to hearing more from Cody Feechan in future!
