Charlie McKerron and Friends

Nairn Arts Centre - 14/09/23

Tim Edey | Ross Ainslie | Charlie McKerron

Managing to catch the last night of the tour we ventured up to beautiful Nairn to enjoy a session with the world class musician and his friends doing what they do best. Enjoy playing to a live appreciative audience. A great night for the audience and ourselves. From someone who has worked with first class jazz and big band musicians in the past (Dizzy Gillespie invited me and a couple of dancers to a special session in Toronto) and coming late to the Scottish music scene has been a joy and revelation. Involvement with the Strathfest Music Festival has also opened my eyes. I love it. In the past working with Jimmy Logan and Andy Stewart, Moira Anderson had been my only engagement with Scottish music.  This evening was a treat.  Small venue, top class musicians and a friendly atmosphere, what more could you ask for? Plus a world music backdrop to many of the sets. I particularly enjoyed the European journey and the Indian influences. Plus the improvisation and the mad increases in tempo. Plus the trust between the players. I understand that Charlie is at the moment working on his solo CD, which features some of the music from this line-up, as well as contributions from other Celtic and World musicians. “These intimate gigs are the perfect way to introduce some of our new music”, says Charlie.

A joyous evening of virtuoso musicianship and a jolly good night out.
