(Preview) Live Music Now: Emerging Artists and Organ Recitals

Anyone suffering from Festival withdrawal symptoms should put Mondays in their diaries throughout September.  Live Music Now Scotland who work with young professional musicians in the early stages of their careers is presenting four morning concerts in the Usher Hall, featuring three duos and one soloist, and at 1.10 every Monday organist John Kitchen celebrates 20 years of his popular ‘Get Organised’ recitals with varied music on the Usher Hall organ.

On 11th September I’ll be delighted to see again Rosie and Anna, soprano Rosie Lavery and pianist Anna Michels, whose June concert at Paxton House (reviewed here) was delightful.  I can also recommend guitarist Jacopo Lazzaretti whose solo playing I admired at a recital in a hospital setting (they get around, these LMNS artists!). On 18th September he and violinist, Eddy Betancourt present an exciting concert including works by Satie and Piazzola as the Saudade Duo.

Starting the season on 4th September are the violin/accordion Ros/Turowska Duo, Sofia Ros and Maria Turowska.  In a varied programme they perform original music and transcriptions from classical composers such as de Falla, Kreisler, and Schnittke, as well as folk music. Solo pianist Phillip Leslie promises wide-ranging repertoire from Scarlatti to Bartok in his concert on 25th September.  With appearances at the Wigmore Hall and the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, under his belt, Phillip has been described as a ‘tour-de-force’ and an “unassuming prodigy.”

Organ maestro John Kitchen has been entertaining Edinburgh audiences with his ‘Get Organised’ recitals since the Usher Hall organ’s restoration in 2002-2003. To mark their 20th anniversary, John is performing four special recitals in celebration. The concert on 4th September has a Scottish theme and includes music from John’s first recital in 2003. On 11th September he’s joined by young baritone, Sebastian Schneeberger, who will sing works by Franck, Handel and Schubert, and on 18th September John plays more Scottish themed music and accompanies bass Alex White in songs by Mozart, Purcell and Bach. His final recital will be a programme of audience requests.

Emerging Artists concerts at 11am cost £3, and it’s £4 for John Kitchen’s ‘Get Organised’ recitals at 1.10.  High quality music for a bargain price!

Kate Calder

Kate was introduced to classical music by her father at SNO Concerts in Kirkcaldy.  She’s an opera fan, plays the piano, and is a member of a community choir, which rehearses and has concerts in the Usher Hall.
